UNIVERSAL PROTEST POSTER PROJECT (UPPP)
Proposal & Prototyping
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Universal Protest Poster Project attempts to address both the practical and theoretical problems of protesting today:
1. When passing protestors (i.e. in front of a McDonalds, Grocery Store, political building etc.) in a car or by foot it is always hard to read the usually hand made signage
of the protestors. This of course renders the protest rather pointless, and as a passing driver it can be a driving hazard trying to figure out what someone is complaining
about in misshapen bubble letters while remaining in control of a motor vehicle.
2. Protests have been rendered nearly useless in our political system today. A far cry from the protests of the cultural revolution, protests today seem like bad genre movies,
cliche abstractions of the oppression in our society, rendered so not by the protestors themselves (god love 'em), but rather by our cynics that has been inspired by years of
individual political impotency within the illusion created by American pop-political magic tricks that disguise and render out of reach the true political determiners of
our collective fate (held firmly by the elite class). Why protest? It changes nothing? And the average citizen could care less.
Public protests then become more of club that
just happens to meet in public to preach to themselves their righteousness, but hey at least they're trying.
3. It would be wonderful to live in a world where individual and community political action mattered as much as capital. It would be wonderful to believe that protests by
concerned citizens could somehow make deep changes in America's political landscape the way it seemed it would in 1967. I'm not sure if we will get there again, or what it
will look like when/if we do, but perhaps if we can change the protest signage, perhaps that is a start in the right direction. Clarifying the cries of the public in a
universal and easily understood form. ENCOURAGING INDIVIDUAL POLITICAL ACTS, while simultaneously questioning their relevance in our current political climate.
This is where the Universal Protest Poster Project comes in (You down with UPPP?).
